BLM

Almost two months ago I wrote of my inability to sleep while thoughts of COVID ravaged my over anxious mind. Tonight I find myself in a similar predicament. With one child safe in my arms and the other safely in his bed, I contemplate what it is like to be a mother. I cannot, however, imagine what it is like to be a black mother. To have a child of color is to add an extra level of fear to the already impossible task of motherhood. Although I will never personally experience this fear, I ache for those who do. I weep for those who fear for their children, family, friends, and theirselves. After hundreds of years you would think as a society we would be better than this. Still though, there are those among us who can not breathe. We cannot continue to stand by as our brothers and sisters of color are abused. One after another they continue to be silenced by hatred and injustice, as we sit idly by as accomplices in the slaughter.

I choose to side with the right side of history and I choose to side with the mothers and their children. I implore you to do the same. Consider your children, your lover, your parents, or your best friend. Imagine if it were them instead of another nameless face on your news network. Imagine someone you love was not only treated with such terrible injustice, but also killed. Consider how that would destroy you. Unfortunately, it is the actual reality of so many others in the world today and by not acting we will continue to allow this hatred to win.

In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be antiracist.” — Angela Davis
